How Often Should You Have A Dental Cleaning?

DentalProfessional teeth cleanings at least once every six months are crucial for one's oral health. We understand that some people can have anxieties or issues with visiting the dentist and are here to help. Patients can call us with any questions ahead of time and go over the dental cleaning process. Contrary to popular belief, dental checkups are not nearly as painful or as long as people believe.

Since each patient is unique, there are multiple treatments that we may use during the appointment.

What to expect during a dental cleaning

The first thing we will do when a patient comes in for a professional dental cleaning is perform a physical examination of the mouth. With a physical examination, we will be able to see the overall condition of the patient's mouth and what the patient needs during the cleaning.

After we complete the exam, we will begin the dental cleaning process. Below are a few of the potential treatments that we may use during the process to help patients have the cleanest and healthiest teeth possible.

Scaling

Scaling is when we remove any and all plaque and tartar buildup on the teeth. Since scalers are handheld tools of different sizes and shapes, we will choose the right size for the patient's health and comfort. While we will do everything in our power to make this portion of the cleaning comfortable, the patient may feel some pressure during this portion of treatment.

Plaque and tartar support gum disease, causing significant damage to the teeth and gums. If left untreated, plaque can continue to build up and lead to potential tooth extractions. Once we remove the plaque, we can begin the power brushing or polishing.

Power brushing or polishing

We will use a special, gritty toothpaste to brush the teeth. Unlike some store-bought brands of toothpaste, this kind we use will have a stronger effect. This deep cleaning toothpaste will power clean the teeth, while also polishing it. The polish will provide a fresh and smooth feel to the teeth.

Professional flossing

As a dental hygienist, we will then floss between the teeth to make sure to remove all of the particles from the dental cleaning. Since it is easy for plaque to stick between teeth, we can remove any excess plaque. This is the perfect time to ask any dental flossing questions, including any tips that could help for better flossing.

Fluoride treatments

A fluoride treatment is given, which helps to protect the teeth from getting any cavities until it is time for the next dental cleaning appointment.

Dental Suggestions

When it is time for you to see your dentist for a professional dental cleaning, you are doing what is necessary to keep your teeth and gums healthy. If your dentist happens to find any oral issues during your dental cleaning, they will set up another appointment in order to discuss the best oral treatment plan that will address your specific oral health issue.
